Anotácia:  The terms "feminism" and "feminist" were absent in Slovak public discourse prior November 1989. With the emergence of independent media and unrestricted flow of information, as a result of political changes in Eastern Europe, the feminist and antifeminist discourses began to appear for the first time in Czechoslovakia. This thesis is an analysis of the role of media in the emergence of feminist and anti-feminist discourses in post-socialist Slovakia. I engage in a rhetorical analysis of Slovak press articles and explicate current "definitions" of the term "feminism." To answer the question of how dominant ideologies are produced, secured and challenged by the media, I employ a form of ideological criticism. In the analysis of the ideological role of media I discuss the relevance of the theory of "articulation."
In this thesis I rethink the work of British cultural studies scholars and formulate my own theoretical positions, with the ambition of filling the gap and contributing to cultural studies of post-socialist culture.
